Roll It
Roulette, literally "small wheel" in French, is one of the main attractions in a casino. Be familiar with it and you can join the fun with this classic gambling game.
In this casino game a croupier or dealer turns the wheel in one direction while throwing the ball against the wheel turning direction. The ball will then settle on one of the 37 or 38 segments depending on the wheel type (whether it is European or American) determining who is the winner.
The first version of this game was said to be devised by mathematician Blaise Pascal with his fascination of devices in perpetual motion. Two Frenchmen Blanc added the double zero in 1842 in order to increase house advantage. The game was brought to America by the early 1800's. It was nicknamed King of Casino Games because of its associated glamour in Monte Carlo casinos.
The pockets of the wheel alternate in color red and black starting from the first number until the last. The numbers are not in consecutive order but there could be. In an American wheel a pocket bearing the number zero and double zero are colored green
The betting could be called 'inside'. Choosing the pocket number the ball will rest. That could be so specific they can call on an inside bet depending on the range of the pocket or their relative position.
For inside bets, a player may call for straight, meaning bet on that the ball will land on a specific number. If player calls for a straight chip is placed on the number square chosen. Players may also call for a split where he or she places their bet on two adjoining numbers. In such case the chips are placed on the line that separates this number.
Calling a street is still an inside bet. Here a player bets on three numbers found one after another in a horizontal line. A chip is placed on the boundary line of the number on the edge. Calling for a corner means a player bets on numbers forming a square layout. In Sixliner, a player bets on two adjoining lines.
As there is inside, there is also outside bets on the groups of the pockets the ball will land, such as what pocket color and also if the number it rests on is odd or even. With even money bets, the player is concerned with 18 numbers be it black or red numbers, high or low or are they even or odd.
A player may also go for an outside group bet. There is first, second, third groups to chose from each containing 12 numbers. In a column bet, players bet 12 number aligned vertically.
